Most states allow drivers to renew by mail and in person, but some also offer phone and online options. However, when your license expires you must visit a department office. In most cases this is because the department requires a vision test and a new picture. Complete an application for a driver's license and select the option to renew.
This can be tricky. Some states will continue to consider you a resident (and require you to file and pay income tax) unless you prove that you have permanently taken up residence elsewhere and have no intention of returning to the state. Renewing a state driver's license could be evidence against that claim, along with any other ties such as owning property in that state.

Not being a legal permanent resident of wherever you are living now might also affect that claim (as if you only have a temporary visa, your state might argue that you would probably be intending to return when it expires).Driver's license notwithstanding, it might be worth your while to consult with a tax attorney who is versed in New York State tax laws and expat affairs, just to make sure you get your situation straightened out and don't run into issues in the future (especially if you ever do end up returning to New York State, or the US in general).
.Your new license or non-driver ID document will come in the mail within 10 days.If your current document will expire within 10 days, you can download a temporary document on the confirmation page at the end of this transaction. You can use it until your new document comes. Unfortunately, if you leave the confirmation page without downloading the temporary document, we cannot recreate it for you.If your current document expires more than 10 days from now, you do not need a temporary document. You will get the new one before your current one expires.
